Contact List Minutes Downloadable Files Who are we? The Council is a group consisting of school parents, school administration representatives (usually the Principal and Vice Principal), student reps from the Student Representative Council, and Community members. Parents are volunteer members and also fill elected executive positions.
What is our purpose? The purpose of the Council is to provide a liaison between the school and the community to support and strengthen the educational process. This is accomplished by assisting with and enhancing our school's activities related to the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social and physical education of the students. Activities could include: • supporting the goals of the school staff and where possible, identifying common goals and assisting in the achievement of these goals; • developing a strong sense of community by providing social functions for families and staff within our school and the community; • supporting the professional development and educational awareness of the Council
Do we fundraise?
Since the doors of Winston Knoll Collegiate opened in 1996, the Council has worked diligently to support the needs of our evolving school. Each year the Council completes fundraising initiatives to provide financial assistance to the school. Our fundraising is done on limited basis, as we now rely mostly on the optional fee that is collected from the families of our students at the beginning of each school year, as well as the sale of our Winston Knoll Community Council Student Activity Calendars. Should additional funding be required, Council will consider other fundraising ideas or events to raise funds which will benefit the school and our community. How do we distribute the money from fundraising?
The proceeds of the Council fundraisers assist the SRC to sponsor school activities and events, provide funds for the Grant Funding Program and assist the Council to carry out other activities and business. The Grant Funding Program is managed by a committee of WKC Administration and Council members. The Program is an opportunity for student initiated projects to receive funding from the Council for events, equipment, competitions, educational trips and other school related activities which benefit the students, teachers and in some cases the community. There are two application deadlines during the year. (Please see Grant Funding under down-loadable files on our website) The committee makes decisions on the applications based on pre-determined criteria. From 1996 to date your Community Council has raised in excess of $127,000.00 which has been dispersed by the Council through the Grant Funding Program. We will post a listing of the amounts at a later date on the website. Some examples of funding purchases are: digital camera, wrestling and cheerleading mats, spotlight for the theatre, computer upgrades, Smart Board, assistance with science fairs, software for the Alternate Education classrooms, graphing calculators for the math department, blinds for the gymnasium windows, athletic photo gallery, volleyball nets and assistance for students to attend competitions, expositions and other school related activities. Thank you to the students, teachers and families who have helped the Council achieve their fundraising goals.
What else do we do? During the school year we plan and host a number of events including: • Welcome Back Treats for Staff and Students • Open House - Council has a table to distribute information and sell WKC Student Activity Calendars and Winston's Meal Cards. • Staff Appreciation Lunch on semester turn around day • Dance concessions (WKC has the BEST dances EVER) The Community Council is responsible for hosting the concession at the dance. We do not chaperone the dance because our Administration and Staff take care of that. If you are interested in coming out to see what goes on at WKC, meet a great group of parents, and have a couple of hours to volunteer, this is an excellent opportunity. Click here for info on how to contact our Chair for the current year. • Provide opportunities for school groups to raise funds through the use of Council concession equipment at school functions • And many more! The Council sponsors the Student Activity Calendar which tells you everything you need to know about what, where and when it's happening at Winston Knoll, like dates for productions, concerts, sporting events, 2 and 3-way conferences, school closures and other important highlights throughout the year. The Council proudly displays student art work in the calendar. If you missed getting a calendar, they are available in the office for $5.00. The Council is also pleased to provide a Graduation Legacy gift to our School along with a $500.00 Scholarship which is awarded to one student. The Scholarship criterion is based on a combination of Life Transitions, volunteer work and community involvement. (Applications are available under downloadable files). Do we have special projects?
The Council has been involved in many special projects from planning and carrying out the project to giving feedback on a number of issues related to the school and the community. Some of the projects are: • Initiation of Winston's Meal Card - the cafeteria known as Winston's has great lunch food. The Council developed a $20 punch card (divided into .25 and 1.00 increments) so students can easily purchase a lunch, drink or snack without having cash all the time. The card has helped increase business at Winston's instead of other • The Rochdale Banner Project - the Council partnered with the Regina Public Library (Sherwood Branch) and •
